I'm 90% sure that no bug could cover that, since nothing in Thunderbird prevents this from happening. I haven't tried it, but I think this is the function add-on authors need to override to do this: http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/base/content/folderDisplay.js#1305
