I have just updated the original test with a stock (direct from mozilla.org) copy of Thunderbird, version 7.0.1 (64-bit).

Answer: no. It remains high, between 20% and 50% of a core.

That other bug sounds related, and I would not be surprised if the buggy code is at least partially shared.
