OK, well this patch will now just spit an error out to stderr pointing right at the problem.
I wouldn't set a dependency on the version of GTK. It's one thing to have a bit of crappy rendered GUI, it's another thing altogether to have the application refuse to run because your libraries are old. I can't imagine the wails of protest if I did that :-)
