Hmm, no I don't even have an Appearance panel. I wonder if that's a difference between Unity and GNOME, or maybe something that's changed since 14.04. I just installed a "Customize Look and Feel" app that lets you change themes. It seems to have added some, but Ambiance isn't in there.

I ended up installing Ambiance (http://askubuntu.com/questions/369369/install-ambiance-theme-in-ubuntu-gnome) and tried it out, but still no transparency.

I also updated Gnome using the gnome3 ppa to supposedly get some newer features, but that didn't help either: https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3.
