Hmm, no I don't even have an Appearance panel. I wonder if that's a difference between Unity and GNOME, or maybe something that's changed since 14.04. I just installed a "Customize Look and Feel" app that lets you change themes. It seems to have added some, but Ambiance isn't in there.

I ended up installing Ambiance (http:// askubuntu. com/questions/ 369369/ install- ambiance- theme-in- ubuntu- gnome) and tried it out, but still no transparency.
I also updated Gnome using the gnome3 ppa to supposedly get some newer features, but that didn't help either: https:/ /launchpad. net/~gnome3- team/+archive/ ubuntu/ gnome3.
