I use ROXTerm (http://roxterm.sourceforge.net/) to do this. This terminal has a D-Bus interface (http://roxterm.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=guide&lang=en#AdvancedDbusUsage) that allows you to dynamically change settings like the profile, color schemes, etc. Sadly, ROXTerm can't arrange terminals in grids as Terminator.
