Hi Stephen,
indeed, the main concern is not to impact terminator's default mode of operation; I'm going through the code again and will try to remove any unnecessary interaction between the two.

There are still a few bugs I would like to address before considering it ready for merging; I'll ping you once the heavy lifting is done. Meanwhile I'll try to keep my branch up to date with the gtk3 branch, so our most brave users can consider testing both features at the same time.
