Are you sure your Facebook account is using XMPP? In the Empathy account dialog, does it have a blurb about "if your facebook profile is http://facebook.com/badger, enter 'badger'"? If not, you're using the old-school screen-scraping libpurple implementation of Facebook chat via Haze; try deleting your account and creating a new Facebook account.
