Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Icons appear against the contact for Audio & Video, but no call to or from MS Messenger contacts are connected. I.e there is no sign/sound in the contacts window (using Windows XP) that they are being called, or likewise in Empathy if you are being called.

Using Lucid alpha 2 live CD.

You reported this bug against empathy 2.29.4 can you please update to 2.29.90 and try to call the contact if that does not work then in help menu click on debug and select butterfly there and try to make the call to the msn contact and when the call does not happen click on hang up button and save the debug to a file by clicking on save button.

As I can only do this with a Live CD or USB drive, I doubt if I will be able to try 2.29.90 until Alpha 3 is available.

I now have Alpha 3 but I cannot test if MSN Video calls work due to a new bug which prevents creation of MSN accounts (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/528740)

Following a downloaded update, Alpha 3 now allows creation of MSN accounts. But video calls to/from MS Messenger still do not work.

Functionality of the remote was verified first by establishing a video call call from MS Messenger in Windows.

A debug is attached as requested above. There were two or three attempts at connecting to the remote from Ubuntu and one attempt at connecting to Ubuntu from the remote. This produced the following message at the remote end:

"Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x80ee001c)"

Empathy version is: 2.29.91-1ubuntu2

I can reproduce this and I have sent this upstream but marking it confirmed as its expected that the issue will turn out to be telepathy-butterfly but we should first hear from empathy developers.

Trying to make Video calls using Empathy in Ubuntu 4.10 (Lucid). Bug was created in GNOME (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=611416#c1) which was closed with a request that we report the problem here.

This is the original Ubuntu bug description (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/519551):-

I have deleted the original debug listing and attached a new version of it with most of the email addresses replaced with <email address removed>. The email addresses that remain are mine and the remote user's email address.

Unfortunately, because of this problem, we've had to disable voip calls in butterfly 0.5.5.

See http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/2010/03/amsn-0-98-2-to-be-released-without-audiovideo-support/ for more details on the situation.

Until P2PV2 is implemented, there will be no more calls.

(Relatedly, we /could/ get webcam-only calls working. We should do that, at least.)

There is a comment on

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26849

saying this will not be fixed soon. Apparently MSN have changed from a server based model to a peer-to-peer method of A/V communications and it involves a 'scarey' re-write of the code. This is a pity as I think A/V over MSN would add great credibility to Ubuntu. I know A/V can be done over Jabber and Skype, but if the people you talk to (like my wife's grandson in Australia) are only on MSN, it sort of locks you into Windows.

Is there any resource in the Ubuntu community that can work on this?

So this depends on p2pv2, which is already required for bug #26849

Audio/Video calls have been re-enabled in papyon/butterfly

So can we get it into Ubuntu for the 10.10 release?
