This is an artifact of the way Stellarium draws objects - it determines whether to draw an object by checking if its center is inside the view. Since the halo is drawn as a decoration of the object, if the Sun is not drawn so is the halo.
As far as I can remember, there's a similar problem with dynamic eye adaptation. Personally, I consider them both to be minor problems.
