Putting a fix in place for a single problem only does not really resolve the issue. A generic solution is much better than a point solution. A mirrorlist channel is generic, is easier to maintain and improve in the codebase as a separate entity and follows the general design of Smart. As I said on IRC IF you finish the code for rpm-md then we can re-visit this and indeed IF you finish the code then it only solves one problem so if anything both should be considered for inclusion in Smart.
