I will try, but may need a little guidance...

I uninstalled 3.2.1 with Synapt.
I found & downloaded 3.4.1.
I extracted the tar.gz, opened the "simple-scan-3.4.1." folder & am reading "INSTALL".

Presumably I need to follow some or all of the 8 steps after "The simplest way to compile this package is: " ?
