Bug Description

Using SimpleScan on an Office Jet Pro 8500A printer I am able to scan single pages. When I use the ADF feature (Scan all Pages from Feeder) the program scans, but does not recongize the end of the batch and waits in an endless loop for a next page. I can save the scanned images, but can not end or close the program, but have to kill it.
I had a possibly related problem on a HP6180A, but in that case the last scanned page was not fully pulled through the ADF. Aborting the scan on the printer then also finished the wait loop in SimpleScan. On the 8500A the scanner finishes normal, but SimpleScan stays in a wait loop. When exiting the Program it locks after selecting "Quit without saving".
Using Linux Mint Debian and had to install HPLIP 3.11.10 in order to support the 8500 Pro

I have got the same problem as above with a HP LASERJET 3052. It is sad, but this problem makes the whole simple scan unusable for me, because I mostly scan more than one multipage document and I want to start a new scan process after scannin for example a 5 page document.

Can someone help me to to solve this bug.

The "simple-scan -d" gives me the following status report

** (simple-scan:3984): DEBUG: sane_start (page=4, pass=0) -> SANE_STATUS_NO_DOCS

And that's all. After that I can not start a new multipage scan...

hp-check -r -t gets no errors.

ADF scanning hangs Simple-Scan, likely a known HPLIP issue as it requires "batch-scan", which can't be enabled in Simple Scan-

For my printer, gscan2pdf can't enable batch-scan either yet, but documentation says it should be possible.

Same problem occurs with Canon Pixma MX870. I am using simple scan 3.6.1 on Ubuntu 13.04. I would be happy to provide additional detail if that would help solve this problem.

By the way, the s/w doesn't quite wait forever: after several minutes it times out and allows me to save the scanned document. One workaround that I would find tolerable is to have a shorter timeout.
