this does not seem to be hardware-related. but just to be sure: while you are at it, please try if using xsane works. thanks!

I tried now and got the exakt same result, simple-scan crashes. It works to scan with xsane. Even though I got an i/o error at first. I then started hplip to have a look at the printer setup. Then xsane worked.

It's the error output in the terminal when running the program and trying to scan.

Are you running Ubuntu? Can you try to catch the bug with apport? After doing what you did to get xsane working, does simple-scan work then, too?

I'll try next time I'm in the office. I run Ubuntu 10.04.3.

Ok, I reported it using apport here:

It always works to scan using xsane and never in simple-scan. It doesn't matter if I use Xsane first.
