It appears the Karmic version of ImageMagick has a bug - it works fine in 10.04 (7:6.5.7.8-1ubuntu1). If you are experiencing it please file a bug against the Karmic package (if one does not already exist).

The bug was simple-scan not correctly handling ImageMagick failing:
