thank you for that hint. It solves half of the "problem" I had.
But, I can't see how this solves the "don't import subfolders" issue.
OK, I have learned now that I can drag&drop all files inside a parent
folder at once as files to Shotwell. Nevertheless, to tick a control
element for subfolder import I prefer as the easier and more elegant
solution.
