Bug Description

I was reading the Advanced Installation guide for 14.04 (https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide/advanced-installation.html) for Software RAID instructions. There is a section entitled "Degraded RAID" which appears to be incorrect. It instructs the user to set a flag, BOOT_DEGRADED=true in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/mdadm. However, this file does not exist, and running "dkpg-reconfigure mdadm" does not seem to create it. Looking into this problem, I found this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/1302195 which makes it sound like the system will always boot when in a "degraded" mode (ie, no configuration is needed). Thus, this documentation should probably be updated - the whole "Degraded RAID" section can probably just be removed.

I don't believe Degraded Raid should be removed, it should simply be pointed out that it is now the default action, I wasted some time on this myself.

Additonally, this is 7 months old and has not been addressed.

I would be happy to edit the documentation to save others the same frustration I just endured.

It would be really helpful if you could provide the proper changes in the form of a merge proposal. This is the branch:

@ j : It would be great if you would edit the master source files and submit a merge proposal, particularly while this is all fresh in your mind after getting through it yourself.

In addition to the master branch that Gunnar pointed you to, there are also quick kickstart how to notes at:

As of May 2016, the current documentation for 16.04 LTS still contains the same misleading paragraphs. Apparently no changes to the documentation (in this part) have been made since 2014.

And before anyone asks: I am not able to delve into the documentation and propose something here (I expect both suggestions above to be obsolete by now :-( )

Changed in serverguide:

Booting in degraded mode (one disk missing in a raid 1 config) doesn't seem to work at all in 16.04 Server. Creating /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/mdadm with "BOOT_DEGRADED=true" or booting with parameter "bootdegraded=true" doesn't seem to make any difference at all. The system boots into initramfs and does not allow me to continue to boot.
