I can get the indicator icon when I manually start /usr/share/sbackup/sbackup-indicator, it also shows the backup progress accurately. The terminal says the same as be4truth reports above, however when I manually do:
$ pgrep gnome-session
2724

So, apparently something is not parsed back correctly? I'll try to do some additional searching and testing in the coming days.
