The proposal "that Thunderbird implement a not-yet-existant [sic] standard" is fine and all, but there is an existent standard that we should be seriously looking at, already supported in Outlook 2007, and theoretically also in Apple Mail on Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" and the iPhone (although I have filed bugs with Apple because I can't get it to work).
