Yes, rebuilding the database from the Packages file takes considerably longer. On two machines that I have it took approximately 50 minutes. It's the second rebuilding that takes several minutes.

The numbers I quoted in the initial post for rebuilding and simplePkgList() are on a database that has already been rebuilt from from just the Packages file.

The system I was using was idle. When the rpm stuff was going, there was pretty much nothing else accessing the disk (was watching it in iotop and gkrellm). There was pretty much nothing else using the cpu either (was watching in top).

I'll generate some --initdb stats if you like, but since I've replicated the same behaviour on different machines with quite different hardware, I am somewhat sceptical that this'll be useful.
