I understand your disappointment but I don't think the developers are waiting for people to forget. This issue has been fixed upstream with a trivial patch wich adds a gconf option, so the developers did do something about this problem (even if it took a long battle for this...).
What I wish to have is this patch backported to the current version of rhythmbox shipped with ubuntu (I guess the version with the patch included will not be available in ubuntu until the next release?). I don't care if the default option stays the same as it is now (which is wrong in my opinion but this has ben beaten to death and I'm tired of it).
To be able to change the default behaviour via gconf is enough for me and I guess for almost all the other people annoyed by this bug, so, since the patch is obviously not dangerous, backporting it is a reasonable solution, IMHO.
