I am just calling for a comment on the hig violation I mentioned, that closing a window should not cause an object in the panel to disappear. For what I understand about tray icons and the intended behavior of rhythmbox, this application shouldn't have a tray icon at all. In any case, I don't think it can be denied that current behavior is unconsistent with all other applications, and this is another indication that the tray icon is not appropriate in this application, which is meant to behave like a single window app, not like a background daemon.

Seeing an icon in the tray we expect a background daemon, and this is an usability problem. It's not because I want it that way, I usually run amarok :) I am pointing out that the HIG states you shouldn't propagate the effect of an action on an object to other visible objects, and that's applicable to the tray icon as well.
