The way I use tags in rednotebook is to track all the important topics I take notes about, so a tag (category, in rednotebook terms) might be the name of a customer or project, and the comment (tag in rednotebook terms) will be a short sentence describing what the note is about. When I select the tag (category) in the search field, I get a very helpful list of dates and comments in the left pane, from which I can follow the development of the topic and easily flip between the full notes.
I have never seen this feature in any other note-taking tool, and it's a killer feature in my opinion. I like the hashtags as well. They are very convenient to add on the fly, but they don't give the excelent overview with short sentences that I can get with the old tags. Maybe hashtags could be extended with a comment, like #rednotebook[Idea about new hashtag function]? Or maybe hashtags could show the most previous heading next to the date in the search result. The important thing for me is to get the list of dates and sentences for the topic/tag. If the tags are managed in a right pane, or as inline formated text, is egal.
