I thought I did, since I also did a general 'apt-get upgrade' to get the system current before adding extra software.

Of course, now that I'm logging it, it's working.

hmm, it seems to be there to me.

Did you remember to run apt-get update before trying to install stuff?

Can you please post the complete output of "apt-get install gpsd"?

Title:
  gpsd and libgps not available in repository

Status in Raspbian:
  New

Bug description:
  Upon creating a new Raspberry Pi SD card from the 2018-03-13-raspbian-
  stretch.img, I found that the gpsd and libgps packages (which I had
  formerly used on jessie image based systems) were not available
  (attempting to install with "apt-get install gpsd"). Upon using an
  archived copy of 2017-03-02-raspbian-jessie.img to initialize the SD
  card, I found that gpsd was supposedly available, but could not find a
  valid version of libgps, so was unable to use gpsd on newly created
  jessie cards either.

  Is there a reason these packages are no longer available in the
  repositories? I had successfully used them about 3 months ago to set
  up Pi's based on the jessie image.

  If I have to do custom compiles of the gpsd software, I will, but I
  would rather use a standardized distribution of all 3rd-party software
  for the multiple Raspberry Pi systems I need to deploy for this
  particular project.
