This is a long and confusing bug report, but recent commits to make NPTL non-optional (and in particular enable it for x86-64 and i386) which will be in QEMU 1.6 should mean that the originally reported problem (of bash failing with "fork: Invalid argument") is fixed, and at least basic single-threaded x86 guest programs should work with linux-user. There may well be other issues still remaining for trying to run complex guest programs like Wine; if so please file fresh reports after retesting with 1.6.
