Bug Description
On python 2.6 it appears that the functions added in commit f0836ab7ea64017 caused a new problem in that the replacement class would not get institated correctly and an infinite recursion would occur.
It is unsure how CI was passing after this, anyways there is a problem here that needs to be fixed.
