Jockey code just does:
apt_policy = subprocess.Popen(['apt-cache', 'policy', 'dkms'], stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE)
which is a valid usage of subprocess as far as I can see. So this looks like a bug in Python's subprocess module?
