ppmtool -v currently reports the version as '0.1000' instead of '0.9'.

I would suggest removing it, using dpkg to query the version, or modifying the code to report the same version as dpkg ( ie. the version from the changelog ). The moblin-media-player just fixed a similar bug and now reports the version using the latest changelog entry. See LP# 203091.
