I applied the last patch (p3) and the problem is fixed. Thanks very much. In my case I'm occasionally switching my USB keyboard and mouse to a (normally) headless music server.
I agree it's a shame that small fixes like this aren't getting into the main distribution. I got my original via the ubuntu software centre. I realise this isn't a critical fix, but using 100% of a CPU isn't good either.
