Just quickly used sshuttle to transparently set up a poor-mans VPN.

After removing the proxy settings in polly it did not work at first. Messages appeared, but icons not.

I had to unset the http/https/ftp_proxy setting in the environment. Then the icons immediately appeared w/o any delay.
