Pinta can fix this issue from the application side. The simple explaination is that Pinta should save the file with the exact name it is actually given, rather than trying to add the file extension automatically. By changing the name it saves to, it's treated as a temporary file and is discarded.

I don't like the justification given, but it's at least actionable.

I suppose then this links to #1679570

For the meantime then, it looks like the portals will have to remain off.
