I can only write from end-user perspective.

1. Isn't adding file extension by program itself some kind of standard now days? I don't think users should deal with file extensions. Some of the programs I use adds extension regardless what I type in as file name e.g. myfile.txt then becomes myfile.txt.txt. I have trained my family users to NOT type file extensions, because this is properly handled by applications. Some of the users just don't know what file extensions are, and why should they, if there are not power users.

2. Having extension-less files is also pretty bad UX. By looking at the file extension I know exactly what kind of content is in file: picture, text, pdf etc. This would mean I would be forced to manually rename each of Pinta saved image in file manager. Not too much of a problem to me, because I know about this trick, but what about others not technical enough to even understand the point.

3. In my humble opinion, end-user should not suffer any kind of application restrictions applied by packaging system. If there are some security restrictions, they should work transparent in the way they protect users, but do not impose technical stuff to remember.

4. The problem in Pinta is little bit lets say more serious, because also of bug 1435226, that when closing file after it was successfully saved, Pinta still reports that file is not saved. In dialog I trained myself to always just click "Close without Saving" button. This is little annoyance, but with combination of file-extension-snap problem it was devastating to my data lost. Don't know how difficult is this bug to be fixed, it is just annoyance, one of very few left in Pinta.

5. In my humble opinion until some solution is found to not inflict bad UX to non-technical users, it is good solution to not use portal. Data lost or data corruption is my humble opinion on the top of sins application can do.
