I'm also on trusty (Xubuntu 14.04) with Pinta 1.5, and in my case the right click is also not available. Since I normally work with a touchpad of which the right click didn't work in Pinta, I attached several mice. The conclusion is:
The right-click menu in Pinta 1.5 is not available
--- with the buttons of my touchpad
--- with 2 different mice (one wireless USB, one wired)

In addition, none of the other software on my box shows a right mouse click problem. Hence, I think it is safe to suggest that the issue might be the Pinta software.

As for Camerons Qs:
--- Yes, your guess is right. Right Click does noting at all. No windows opening, no menus popping up. It is just like nothing was clicked at all, total absence. Have tried to get to the Right Click menu for several tools, e.g. colour picker, eraser, move selection, apint brush, bucket fill, gradient...
--- So no, it does not work the same way as the Left Click.
