I'm unable to reproduce this on Ubuntu 12.04 (with the latest development version of Pinta).

Has anyone else seen this issue?

I installed Xubuntu and still do not see this issue.

What are your language / keyboard settings? It might be an issue related to that.

This looks to me like a bug 738065 which was fixed in Pinta v1.2. I tried to reproduce the problem in Pinta v1.4 on Windows XP and on Pinta latest development on Ubuntu 12.04 and I can't reproduce the bug 738065, so it is fixed in my case.

@mrDoctorWho, I see from your post that you installed Pinta v1.4 from PPA, but maybe something got wrong at installation and actually you have some older version like v1.1. Can you please do the following two tests:

1. Start Pinta and from menu select Help | About. On About Pinta tab there is Version. What is the version you are seeing?
2. When you press <Backspace> and problem appears, press <Delete> key. What do you see? Transparent background?
3. Can you reproduce the bug in the same way as described in bug 738065?

I checked default packages released in Ubuntu 12.04 and I can see there was Pinta v1.1: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/pinta so some problem in PPA install may be more likely.

@mrdoctorwho, can you please write detailed step-by-step instruction how you produce this bug. I have manage to produce the same problem, but I am not sure this is exactly step-by-step identical to this bug. So I have reported another one bug 1074877.
