Please find another name for PHRAYMD
it's not easy to remember and i don't even know how to pronounce it !

it's very hard to find an english name that could suit for phraymd considreing that i'm french... besides, i'm note good at that game.
However here are some suggestions :
descriptive : GNOME Photo Album, GNOME Photo Collection Manager
acronym : Phocoma (not sexy to me)
As far as i'm concerned, i'd prefer something more abstract
more abstract : Exposure, Luminance (photography is a matter of light), Illuminance, Luma
more abstract + exotic : Cliché (1), Lumière (2)
(1) I like this one but i'm not sure that it has as many significations in english as in french
(2) i also like this one : photography is a matter of light (=lumière in french) ; besides the Lumière brothers played an important role in color photography (and Niepce already exists as software !)
Cliché, Lumière and Luma sound good to me
antistress (antistress) wrote : | #3 |
if you use the light metaphor, you could use a ray of light, a rainbow, an iris eye etc. to draw the logo/icon
maybe an eye with lighting effects in the iris ?
some lighting effects : http://

Or a rainbow finishing in an iris (something like that http://
orther ideas :
http://
i like this last one !
antistress (antistress) wrote : | #4 |
Lumière would be cool with that logo http://
I would be quite original i think
maybe Dy (the author) would be ok to let you use its creation
a creative commons licence would fit i guess
I also like Cliché. I guess the logo should be a bit different
dmoore (damien-moore) wrote : | #5 |
A cliché (US: /klɪˈʃeɪ/ UK: /ˈkliːʃeɪ/, from French), is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. http://
^^^ Almost perfectly summarizes digital photography :D
As a more serious alternative, I do like Lumière and agree that style of image would work as a logo. Also, google doesn't seem to return any photo software named Lumière.
I've always thought a light based metaphor would suit an image capture or editing program (playing with the light), but less so a manager, where gallery/workflow might be a better metaphor...
Anyway, Lumière is high in the running, with cliché a good alternative.
antistress (antistress) wrote : | #6 |
in french a cliché also mean a photo but i'm not sure it's also the case in english
indeed Lumière could suit better a capture program
The problem that it's hard to find an interesting metaphor for a manager...
I also thought of an album photo. Maybe Album could suit ? But it may exist lots of software called Album (maybe too generic, too cliché ;-)
A name composed with Collection would fit
Also i had this strange idea that a cool logo could be a poker game where cards would be replaced with polaroids (you would see the back of a player with polaroids in his hands)...
I didn't want to say a word about PICMAN name (picture manager) with a logo that would look like PACMAN hunting polaroid ghosts http://
That picture given above http://

I took good note that phraymd is a play on framed, but since the application is named phraymd and not framed, does phraymd means something else than framed (= is it a two-way name) ?
For the record i put here your request for an icon : http://

picman is cool. could be trademark issues if it too closely associates with pacman... I notice there's some sort of web based photo software called picman, but that shouldn't matter.
I have had one positive response to the inkscapeforum post
>>phraymd means something else than framed
as far as I know it isn't a word in any language. google search came up blank, which was one of the reasons for the choice.

Why not Framed ?
dmoore (damien-moore) wrote : Re: [Bug 395391] Re: Please find another name for PHRAYMD | #14 |
>Why not Framed ?
It's in the running. "Framed Photo Manager" is slightly awkward...
antistress (antistress) wrote : Re: Please find another name for PHRAYMD | #15 |
indeed
after some thinking, you may already have find the good title...
* PHRAYMD is better than Framed since it's more distinctive which is important 1°) for the software identity 2°) to make the differentiation between the common word and this application (search the web for framed or PHRAYMD : it's easier to find what you want if the application is named PHRAYMD)
* your idea for the logo (comment 9) perfectly matches both the application concept and name
* your wife will be happy ;-)
But PHRAYMD is unpronounceable, at least for non english people (is it P.H.R.A.Y.M.D like Y.M.C.A. ?!) whereas phraymd is pronounceable
Therefore i suggest to keep phraymd (in minuscule letters) and to close that useless bug report :-)

I'll keep the bug report around for a while longer, but I'm going to mark it
"confirmed" and "wishlist". I can definitely live with phraymd for the
foreseeable futurem.

happy wife, happy life :)

I don't expect to make a major name change anytime soon.
For now the project will use the title "phraymd", all lowercase. I'll try to make this usage case consistent on web-sites and throughout the app.

Some guidelines to create the icon :
1°) Tango Icon Theme Guidelines
http://
"There are three major icon sizes an icon theme must address: Large, Small, and Extra Small.
Since Tango uses vectors for the large size, all other sizes—excluding small and extra small—are handled by scaling this vector icon to the target resolution. The reason to explicitly define small and extra small sizes (and not just use a scaled version of the large size) is because using such a small size requires object simplification, which often includes a change in perspective.
Some desktops do not make the extra effort to create pixel-perfect small sized renderings and simply render the large size onto the tiny canvas. While this may appear to save a lot of work, we believe the extra effort is only marginal and the resulting extra definition ("crispness") is worth it. While display resolutions increase over the years, there is also a fairly large market of small devices such as PDAs that will benefit greatly from the attention to the smaller-sized icons. Below, we include suggested workflows to help the icon designer to be as efficient as possible when creating all sizes."
etc.

Good point
however note that some applications have a specific icon for small size
(i.e. showing only a part of the big icon)
the small size icon can be the same than the big one in smaller size or a derivative work

thanks for this. It looks good, though the polaroid theme is in use by
f-spot and solang (this isn't necessarily a dealbreaker).
I'll gladly take additional contributions. If you need some
inspiration/
name: a picture frame, a door frame, a wireframe....
re not liking phraymd, to me it's the ideas that matter at this point.
There is still much to do and polish: you are basically looking at a

In any case, these are nice.
Here's a thought: I can start using these and others in my PPA
releases. With each new PPA release (monthly or more frequently) I can
use a new logo. The full size image will appear on the about page and
the launchpad project page, with a simplified version as the
application icon. Thoughts?

Just to be clear, the purpose of this would be to encourage additional
ideas until we settle on a final one.

antistress (antistress) wrote : | #43 |
yeKcim : i wasn't clear when i wrote "man/doll/face" it can be something quite abstract like a wood doll (http://
It's hard to explain in english but i believe that a logo with somebody in it instead of a landcape would be warmer and could give phraymd an extra touch of soul and give it a better identity
What do you think ?
yeKcim (yekcim) wrote : | #44 |
I think that phraymd5.svg is fun and i don't need to spent more time on the logo actually. If you need a logo you can use the actual one, phraymd5 or waiting for an other contributor. I'm not professionnal graphist, it's really difficult for me to draw something not bad. phraymd5 is the best i can do now. I don't force you to use my contribution. If you like, you can use it, if not, it's not a problem, i can understand.
dmoore (damien-moore) wrote : | #45 |
Personally, I like the contribution and will be happy to include it in
the next PPA. We can see how much we like it after that... :)
yeKcim: assuming we use it, how do you want to be credited?

I see that you choose the first icon i proposed and i think that's not a good choice.
Here is some icons (see attached svg), i definitively think that 4 is the best one, 8 the second est choice.
That's my last contribution to phraymed icon, i'll try to draw mockup as soon as possible.

actually I used the first icon only for the app icon (I used the one
you posted at #42 in the about box). I didn't like the look of most of
the others at 24x24 (or smaller)
As I said, I plan to rotate through some of these in the next few PPA
releases. The next release will be in a couple of days (some bugs to
fix). I'll choose one from the last batch for the next app icon.
