Bug Description

Please find another name for PHRAYMD
it's not easy to remember and i don't even know how to pronounce it !

pronounce it "framed". I consider the current name a working title for now.

BUT if anyone has suggestions for a new name post them here...

it's very hard to find an english name that could suit for phraymd considreing that i'm french... besides, i'm note good at that game.

However here are some suggestions :

descriptive : GNOME Photo Album, GNOME Photo Collection Manager
acronym : Phocoma (not sexy to me)

As far as i'm concerned, i'd prefer something more abstract
more abstract : Exposure, Luminance (photography is a matter of light), Illuminance, Luma
more abstract + exotic : Cliché (1), Lumière (2)

(1) I like this one but i'm not sure that it has as many significations in english as in french
(2) i also like this one : photography is a matter of light (=lumière in french) ; besides the Lumière brothers played an important role in color photography (and Niepce already exists as software !)

Cliché, Lumière and Luma sound good to me

if you use the light metaphor, you could use a ray of light, a rainbow, an iris eye etc. to draw the logo/icon

maybe an eye with lighting effects in the iris ?
some lighting effects : http://www.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/JB+SYSTEMS+LIGHT+SPLASH+II+FLOWER.JPG

Or a rainbow finishing in an iris (something like that http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2007/09/rainbow.jpg )

I would be quite original i think
maybe Dy (the author) would be ok to let you use its creation
a creative commons licence would fit i guess

I also like Cliché. I guess the logo should be a bit different

A cliché (US: /klɪˈʃeɪ/ UK: /ˈkliːʃeɪ/, from French), is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clich%C3%A9

^^^ Almost perfectly summarizes digital photography :D

As a more serious alternative, I do like Lumière and agree that style of image would work as a logo. Also, google doesn't seem to return any photo software named Lumière.

I've always thought a light based metaphor would suit an image capture or editing program (playing with the light), but less so a manager, where gallery/workflow might be a better metaphor...

Anyway, Lumière is high in the running, with cliché a good alternative.

Revision history for this message
antistress (antistress) wrote :

in french a cliché also mean a photo but i'm not sure it's also the case in english

indeed Lumière could suit better a capture program
The problem that it's hard to find an interesting metaphor for a manager...

I also thought of an album photo. Maybe Album could suit ? But it may exist lots of software called Album (maybe too generic, too cliché ;-)

A name composed with Collection would fit

Also i had this strange idea that a cool logo could be a poker game where cards would be replaced with polaroids (you would see the back of a player with polaroids in his hands)...

I didn't want to say a word about PICMAN name (picture manager) with a logo that would look like PACMAN hunting polaroid ghosts http://www.geekalerts.com/u/pacman-coasters.jpg ... Indeed even if only one letter divide them, i don't think that people may make connection between PICMAN and PACMAN ?

That picture given above http://static1.abduzeedo.com/files/images/Space_Light_Effects_in_Photoshop/Step_2_-_Retro_Colors.jpg could perfectly suit as a logo/icon whatever would be the name. It may be less artistic than Dy's artwork (more geometric, like F-Spot) but more recognizable.

indeed

after some thinking, you may already have find the good title...

* PHRAYMD is better than Framed since it's more distinctive which is important 1°) for the software identity 2°) to make the differentiation between the common word and this application (search the web for framed or PHRAYMD : it's easier to find what you want if the application is named PHRAYMD)
* your idea for the logo (comment 9) perfectly matches both the application concept and name
* your wife will be happy ;-)

But PHRAYMD is unpronounceable, at least for non english people (is it P.H.R.A.Y.M.D like Y.M.C.A. ?!) whereas phraymd is pronounceable

Therefore i suggest to keep phraymd (in minuscule letters) and to close that useless bug report :-)

I don't expect to make a major name change anytime soon.

For now the project will use the title "phraymd", all lowercase. I'll try to make this usage case consistent on web-sites and throughout the app.

Changed in phraymd:
assignee: nobody → spillz (damien-moore)
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Confirmed

Some guidelines to create the icon :

1°) Tango Icon Theme Guidelines
http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Icon_Theme_Guidelines#Sizes

"There are three major icon sizes an icon theme must address: Large, Small, and Extra Small.

Since Tango uses vectors for the large size, all other sizes—excluding small and extra small—are handled by scaling this vector icon to the target resolution. The reason to explicitly define small and extra small sizes (and not just use a scaled version of the large size) is because using such a small size requires object simplification, which often includes a change in perspective.

Some desktops do not make the extra effort to create pixel-perfect small sized renderings and simply render the large size onto the tiny canvas. While this may appear to save a lot of work, we believe the extra effort is only marginal and the resulting extra definition ("crispness") is worth it. While display resolutions increase over the years, there is also a fairly large market of small devices such as PDAs that will benefit greatly from the attention to the smaller-sized icons. Below, we include suggested workflows to help the icon designer to be as efficient as possible when creating all sizes."
etc.

2°) Draw a sharp/pixel-perfected icon onto the grid

thanks for this. It looks good, though the polaroid theme is in use by
f-spot and solang (this isn't necessarily a dealbreaker).

I'll gladly take additional contributions. If you need some
inspiration/constraints: I've contemplated ideas that play on the
name: a picture frame, a door frame, a wireframe....

re not liking phraymd, to me it's the ideas that matter at this point.

It's hard to explain in english but i believe that a logo with somebody in it instead of a landcape would be warmer and could give phraymd an extra touch of soul and give it a better identity
