" log_error = error.log" as expected (the paths are taken relative to datadir). You can make it "log_error = error.err" as workaround..

I have created - https://bugs.launchpad.net/percona-xtradb-cluster/+bug/1231121 to make this configurable.

Also, added to errata here http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-xtradb-cluster/errata.html
