Point taken - although FLUSH ENGINE LOGS does reliably solve this for MariaDB, this is a MariaDB bug, not an xtrabackup bug. It was convenient to hack around it with xtrabackup.

Looks like the MariaDB fix will need some work too to get us where we need to be.
