I also just got this error.

My MySQL version is 5.5.22.

To me it looks like it is OS depended.
The tool runs fine without any error when I run it from a CentOS 6.2 64bit machine.
I get the error when I run it from a CentOS 5.8 64bit machine.

Same command against the same remote database server.
pt-table-checksum dbsrv1 -u mschirrmeister -p xxx --replicate percona.checksums --create-replicate-table --databases certs --nocheck-replication-filters --replicate-database percona
