The "core dump" may be a sign that it's related to this other issue:

There is a patch in the first comment there. It's scheduled for next release.

Apart from there being a serious problem with the error reporting (throwing errors in a loop and core dumping) , the original 'user' error was often a wrong --alter command.

Try applying the patch and see if you get a more meaningful error report.
