When the server is "hung" I can get into the MySQL prompt indeed, but I cannot do anything with the replication thread.
ie: stopping slave

I can run mysql commands though, so what you suggest can be done.
I am waiting on MariaDB to check what you suggested in the previous post.

In the meantime, we have converted all the tables to InnoDB as this was biting us quite often and degrading our service.
