@mig5 - they may be just fine for your environment and you are right, an assertion failure is not ok.
Regarding your first reported error "exceeds the log group capacity", the inno_xxx_size values being too low can cause this.
Not running mysql_upgrade between major version upgrades may cause assertion failures in some cases.
