Last night, this issue got more interesting. We upgraded a completely different cluster with clients to the Debian client version 5.5.30-2 and this time we did not touch the server (so the server is still running 5.5.30-1). Now the same issue occurs: client is unable to connect to the server with the same SSL error as before: ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error: error:00000001:lib(0):func(0):reason(1)

This suggests that not so much the server or the client is to blame, but some kind of difference between them. This still does not explain the situation where both are running the same version after an upgrade though.
