@Donatas Glodenis: I've asked about xrandr probing - http://askubuntu.com/questions/54422/is-there-a-way-to-disable-or-limit-system-xrandr-probes - no answers yet but some searching has revealed references to gnome-settings-daemon and http://live.gnome.org/RandR - nothing I've been able to uncover yet but could be helpful for the workaround you suggested?
