You seem to have a problem with the size of you icons set or with your font (bt file). So i suppose that you have your own theme and you should pass at the official theme of your distribution for trying.
I don't think that not the fact that you use KDE or Gnome but some version of GTK (you have perhaps some old librairies of Gnome) because unlike at the 1.1.3-1, the version 1.2.2-1 needs to have GTK 2.18 or more.
