Can you try running OpenShot from the terminal:
$ openshot

See if any errors appear in the terminal window. Also, are you using multiple monitors or just a single monitor? Not sure if that would cause the clips to snap to the wrong position... Hmmm...

Also, just out of curiosity, you might try installing Ubuntu 10.10 in VirtualBox, and see if OpenShot works there.
