Would it be any easier to have a pop up balloon when your mouse rolls over the clip that shows any changes to the default settings for the clip? If there are no attributes set, there is no balloon, but if you changed something it would be in the pop up.
Some people don't like pop up balloons, so maybe binding to the "A" key (for attribute) or "C" (for changes), or any other key that makes sense so that it toggle a popup for that clip to show changes.
Another thought is an icon on the clip like the current ones for mute audio and video that shows/hides changes to attributes for that clip.
