I am not agree too for the same reason. We will be limited only at Gnome3 and If I remember well Unity will replace Gnome3 which not be by default. Openshot is for all the GTK environment and same in KDE so I think that it is not really a good idea.
When I have done the tests in February (of the last year : already :) ) with ffmpeg (and validate it ), it was for not depending of another thing like another librairy or an environment.
