I updated to OpenShot 1.4.3 and the CPU is still running at 64 - 75% - while OpenShot is doing absolutely nothing. This is after leaving it for a good 15 minutes to settle. I am suspicious that it is also causing Ubuntu to freeze regularly (something is, but I cannot be certain it is OpenShot - but it is a major suspect)

The process is showing that it has opened the file .xsession-errors

.xsession-errors is attached

I've just noticed something further on this.

If I leave OpenShot idle, but with the playback marker on a video clip, the CPU runs high as described above (around 68%)

If I leave the playback marker on an area where there is no video, and no audio, CPU drops to around 8-12%

Yet in either case I would expect it to be doing nothing ...

I can confirm this behavior.

Openshot opened without loaded projet 11% CPU load (according to top)
Openshot with loaded project 53% load

This needs some attention. An app that chews CPU gratuitously is badly programmed.

Here is the CPU usage for the openshot process *after each step has completed* (ie wasted CPU usage)
  Start openshot: 7% CPU
  Import 127MB file: 7% CPU
  Drag onto timeline: 7% CPU
Press play then pause in the video preview frame: 25%

Platform:
  Openshot 1.4.3-1
  libmlt4 0.7.6+git20120204-2
  Xubuntu 12.04.2
  kernel 3.2.0-39-generic SMP x86_64

Can we increase the priority on this?

The situation will change in the future with the 2.0.0. because all will be
done to use the power of our CPU (our own video framework i.e Libopenshot,
OpenCL and our feature of video distributed).
