Bug Description

I installed these OpenType fonts:

http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/fontin.html
http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/delicious.html

I noticed they do show up in GNOME, but they don't show up in OpenOffice.org.

Most commercial foundries offer their fonts in OpenType or PostScript format.

Just wanted to confirm this for Fontin at least. It appears to be an upstream issue with any OpenType fonts with the .otf extension (which should mean they have PostScript outlines).

See:

Apparently, you can do a somewhat lossy conversion to TTF.

Indeed, it seems to be an upstream issue. Anyway the lossy conversion is total crap.

So that's not an option.

It's possible to do a lossless conversion to Type1, where the glyph quality remains unaffected, but Type 1 font can only handle 256 glyph in contrast to the 65535 glyphs OpenType can handle.

So that's not ideal either. OOo should support OpenType without any fuss

Just filed a bug yesterday (sadly, I did not find /this/ bug until today) that is a dup of this one - bug 121294). I have a small screencast showing the problem with an OTF font that I recently acquired myself. It's a shame, because the font is really good looking, IMHO.

Is there any way to make OOo use the font rendering that comes with Ubuntu? IIRC, OOo uses a lot of its own private copies of shared libs and that is one reason that it has other issues, as well, including increased memory usage because it isn't sharing with the libs that the rest of the system is using.

What does the OpenOffice/OpenOffice.org trademark have to do with this?

The bug was renamed in violation of an existing trademark when it was
properly named the first time. I was merely pointing that out.

I've retested this in Ubuntu Hardy, using OpenOffice 2.4, and OpenType font are still not recognized at all.

Same link as before, Now it sais: "it looks like this support may appear in OpenOffice.org 3.2" (currently being 3.1.1). Follow the link to discover what exactly is/is not supported actually, and some workarounds.

As far as I know opentype should work with 3.2 unfortunately printing on Lucid Lynx still doesn't work. I use an Adobe OT Font "Adobe Jensen Pro" to test. An "Hello World" in Adobe Jensen Pro doesn't print, only a blank page comes out on my HP Laser Jet 1015 and I get an error message. There are also problems with pdf printing in through gs at the moment (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ghostscript/+bug/416057) so I don't know if there is a connection. Here is my error LOG from Cups
