Look at the attachement. It's using a fresh database with demo data and the product_variant_configurator module from the stable 5.0 extra addons.

Create a new sale order, then click on the 'configure line' button. In the osv_memory popup, select the "Mezannine" template. That specific template is important because it already comes with "variant axes" to select. As explained in the screenshot, with the web-client, the variant axes do not appear on on_change.
